For the past four years, My friend 'Bean' has been a smoker. However, her parents still do not know about this habit, as she has managed to hide it from them.
But why? Is the question i find myself asking.
Since she is now what is deemed 'a responsible adult' able to make her own decisions in life, why should she keep it from her parents. Is she embarrased of this habit she seems so fond of?
Eating mints and spraying perfume on enetering the house after a night out are a common occurrence. She often hides her many lighters in that 'oh so secret' hiding place... her knicker draw.
Bean is aware of all the dangers of smoking, so i put the question to her.
The main reason for hiding the habit from her parents is for fear that they would be angry at her, and ultimately ashamed.
So why, if she thinks smoking is something to be ashamed of, does she do it?
I did perhaps think that it was because neither of her parents were smokers, but then wondered if it would actually be any different. For it seems no parent wants their child to harm themselves. So do you just grow wiser with age? Do you realise eventually that it was a silly idea to begin smoking in the first place, and wish you never had? I really don't know.
Anyway, one day in the "near future" bean informs me, she will stop smoking, but she hopes that her parents will never find out about her smoky past.
This website suggests possible reasons why teens start and/or continue to smoke

I don't think that Beans is being completely bad, because that would mean every child is bad.... I'm sure we all do things that our parents don't know about, whether that is a small white lie or maybe something bigger like being a regular smoker. It’s understandable to not want to let your parents down, or to not want them to think badly of you. The fact that she hides it means she knows that she's doing something bad, and that means she’s one step closer to fixing it! It’s the whole concept of what you don't know can't hurt you, but maybe that’s what bad people say to justify their actions......
